Walk-and-Talk therapy is gaining momentum in the mental health world — and for good reason. But what exactly is it? Well, it’s just as it sounds; walking with your therapist during an appointment instead of meeting in a traditional office setting. I’m a huge advocate of walking during counseling sessions and I’ve seen amazing results in clients who choose to utilize this approach. Here are a few of the key benefits:

It may be easier to share.

It can be intimidating sitting across from someone you hardly know and divulging private information. I’ve found that a lot of clients find it easier to share thoughts, experiences + emotions while walking side-by-side instead of sitting face-to-face. It can also help make the therapist more relatable when the client is able to view them outside of an office setting.

It can help you get unstuck

Many people hire Counselors in Virginia Beach because they feel stuck; in negative thought patterns, in toxic relationships, in their career, in poor health, or just stuck in general. Walking with your therapist allows you to get off the couch (literally + figuratively) to help you gain momentum for navigating through difficult times.

Exercise

We already know that regular physical activity is crucial for positive mental health. But simultaneous exercise + counseling can be even more effective for reducing symptoms related to stress, anxiety + depression. It can be extremely beneficial for clients to have a physical outlet to help manage the intensity of emotions that may arise during an appointment.

You get to spend time outdoors

I know that a lot of us are so busy that we don’t have the time to get outside regularly. Through the use of Walk-and-Talk therapy, you’re literally scheduling a time to be outside. Spending time outside continues to be associated with increased levels of happiness + reduced levels of depression.
