It’s the time of year for backyard BBQ’s, trips to the beach, pool-parties + outdoor concerts. While there’s a lot about the summertime to enjoy, it can also elicit some feelings of anxiety + insecurity as you anticipate standing half-naked in a bathing suit at the summer kick-off party. It can be tempting to try fad diets, over-exercise or just plain starve yourself in an attempt to get your summer body in shape by the weekend. DON’T. DO. IT. There are healthier ways to feel confident in your body! Skipping meals for a week is only going to sabotage your long-term wellness goals + damage your self-esteem.
Instead, try these 6 tips for boosting your body confidence this summer:
Sweat Everyday
With the lack of routine that often accompanies the summer months, exercise is usually the first thing that goes out the window. Not only does exercise help you to achieve the body you desire, but it just makes you feel good. When you’re exercising regularly, you feel accomplished after a workout + begin to feel proud of the progress you’re making. This has a significant impact on your overall self-esteem, so be sure you’re getting in some sort of movement each day.
Moderate + Detox
Summertime is synonymous with drinking, and I’m not suggesting you eliminate this type of fun from your life (if it’s your thing) But be sure to take some days off in between your big nights (or days) out. Alcohol is a depressant + can make you feel depressed (after all those feel-good emotions of your buzz wear off.) The depression is more intense if you’re hungover, so try to drink in moderation. The drinks you consume also contain a bunch of empty calories that can add up in a hurry – so try to stick to the lighter options!
Don’t Compare
We all have vastly different body shapes + sizes, and nothing makes this more apparent than sitting on a beach with hundreds of other people in bathing suits. It can be tempting to compare your body to everyone else you see, but that’s only setting yourself up for failure. If you’re looking for it, you’ll always be able to find someone who is a thinner, taller, or has better (fill in the blank). Instead, focus your attention on enjoying the present moment: being outside, in beautiful weather, with people you love.
Don’t Skimp on Self-Care
With all of the social events of the summer, it can be tempting to go out every evening. After all, you don’t want to miss out on any of the fun you’ve been waiting all year for! But be sure to take some time for yourself + schedule your favorite self-care activities each week to help you recharge. Don’t neglect your own needs just because you have FOMO.
Invest In Summer Attire
It’s pretty simple: when you look good, you tend to feel good. That’s why we take so long to pick out our clothes! I’m here to tell you, nothing takes away confidence quicker than an ill-fitting bikini. Invest in a good bathing suit and/or summer clothing items that you feel good in. It’s an instant self-esteem boost!
Practice Self-Love
This is the only body you’re ever going to get, do you really want to spend your life wishing for a new one? Focus on all the great qualities of your body + all of the things it’s allowed you to accomplish. When you start to look at your body for everything it is instead of everything it’s not, it can serve as a much needed perspective shift.
